Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory: helmet with visor and hearing protection, protective gloves, protective trousers with cut protection, and safety boots.
WARNING! A chainsaw is a dangerous tool if used incorrectly. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. Never use a chainsaw if you are tired, ill, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble on a clean, stable surface.
CAUTION! Fuel is highly flammable. Refuel outdoors, with engine stopped and cooled. Wipe off any spillage.
Main Controls: Front handle with chain brake, Rear handle with throttle trigger and lockout, Stop switch, Choke control, Primer bulb (if equipped), Throttle latch, Decompression valve (if equipped).
Safety Features: Chain brake (manual/inertia), Right hand guard, Chain catcher, Throttle trigger lockout.
Maintenance Points: Air filter cover, Spark plug, Cylinder cover, Chain tensioner, Oil pump adjustment screw.
Cold Start:
Warm Start: Do not use choke. Follow steps 1, 4, 5, and 7.
Stopping: Release throttle, press and hold the stop switch until engine stops.
Always use full throttle when cutting. Let the chain do the work; do not force it.
Tip: Regularly check chain sharpness. A dull chain increases effort and risk.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Daily / Before use | Check chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Check all controls and safety devices. Clean air filter. General inspection for damage/loose parts. |
| Weekly / 5 hours | Clean cooling fins and cylinder cover. Check spark plug condition and gap (0.5 mm / 0.020"). Clean fuel filter. |
| Monthly / 20 hours | Clean carburetor air intake. Check fuel line for cracks. Clean exterior of carburetor. |
| Annually / 100 hours | Replace fuel filter and spark plug. Check clutch drum and sprocket for wear. Have compression and carburetor adjustment checked by authorized dealer. |
Sharpening: Use a round file matching chain pitch (e.g., 4.0 mm for 3/8" Mini). File each cutter from inside out at recommended angle (typically 30°). Maintain equal length on all cutters. File depth gauges with a flat file and gauge.
Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Turn tensioning screw clockwise until chain is snug against bar but can be pulled around by hand. Tighten bar nuts while lifting bar tip. Re-check tension.
CAUTION! Always wear protective gloves when handling chain. A sharp chain is safer than a dull one.
For storage longer than 30 days:
WARNING! Storing with fuel in the tank can cause carburetor damage from gum deposits.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not start | No fuel, flooded engine, faulty spark plug, clogged air/fuel filter, choke setting wrong | Check fuel, dry spark plug, replace if faulty, clean/replace filters, follow correct starting procedure. |
| Engine starts but stops | Dirty air filter, clogged fuel filter, carburetor adjustment, faulty ignition | Clean air filter, replace fuel filter, have carburetor adjusted by dealer. |
| Engine lacks power | Clogged air filter, dull chain, carbon build-up in muffler, incorrect fuel mix | Clean air filter, sharpen chain, clean muffler spark arrestor, use correct 50:1 mix. |
| Chain does not turn | Chain brake engaged, clutch worn, sprocket worn, drive link damage | Disengage chain brake, inspect clutch, sprocket, and chain for wear/damage. |
| Poor chain lubrication | Empty oil tank, clogged oil channel, incorrect oil viscosity | Fill tank, clean oil outlet hole and bar groove, use recommended chain oil. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components, unbalanced chain, damaged anti-vibration mounts | Tighten all nuts/bolts, balance chain by sharpening evenly, inspect mounts. |
