Product Overview & Specifications

Key components: Kawasaki FX series engine, dual hydrostatic transaxles, 61-inch fabricated mower deck, ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure), high-back seat, and ergonomic control panel.

Controls and Indicators

Familiarize yourself with all operator controls and indicators located on the control panel and steering levers.

  1. Ignition Switch: Off, Run, Start positions.
  2. Steering Levers: Control speed and direction (forward/reverse) for each drive wheel.
  3. Parking Brake Lever: Engages brake and locks steering levers in neutral.
  4. Blade Engage PTO Switch: Engages and disengages mower deck blades.
  5. Throttle/Choke Control: Controls engine speed and choke for cold starts.
  6. Hour Meter: Tracks total machine operating hours for maintenance.
  7. Indicator Lights: Oil pressure, battery charge, and PTO engagement.

WARNING! Never bypass the operator presence system (seat switch). Ensure parking brake is engaged before starting.

Operation Instructions

Follow these steps for safe daily operation.

  1. Pre-Operation Check: Inspect for fluid leaks, tire pressure, loose hardware, and deck condition. Check oil and fuel levels.
  2. Starting: Sit in seat, engage parking brake, set throttle to half, turn key to START.
  3. Mowing: Release parking brake. Move steering levers slowly forward to move. Engage PTO switch to start blades.
  4. Stopping: Disengage PTO, move levers to neutral, engage parking brake, turn key to OFF.

CAUTION! Do not operate on wet grass. Always look in the direction of travel, especially when backing up.

Maintenance Schedule

Adhere to the following maintenance intervals to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Service more frequently under severe conditions.

Engine Service

Procedures for the Kawasaki FX850V engine. Always use genuine Husqvarna or Kawasaki parts.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil. Drain via plug, replace filter, refill with SAE 10W-30 (approx. 2.1 qts).
  2. Air Filter: Remove cover, clean foam pre-filter in soapy water, replace paper element if dirty.
  3. Spark Plugs: Gap at 0.030 inch. Replace every 300 hours or annually.
  4. Fuel Filter: Locate in-line filter, clamp fuel line, replace filter, ensure no leaks.
  5. Valve Clearance: Check/adjust when engine is cold. Intake: 0.004-0.006 in. Exhaust: 0.006-0.008 in.

WARNING! Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow sufficient cool-down time.

Hydraulic System

The hydrostatic drive system is sealed. Maintenance primarily involves checking fluid levels and changing filters.

  1. Fluid Check: Park on level ground. Check sight glass on each transaxle. Fluid should be in middle of glass.
  2. Filter Change: Every 200 hours. Place drain pan, remove old filter, apply oil to new filter gasket, install hand-tight.
  3. Bleeding Air: If drive is sluggish, drive forward and backward in an open area for 2-3 minutes to purge air.
  4. Fluid Type: Use only Hydro-Gear 20W-50 hydraulic oil or equivalent.

CAUTION! Do not mix different hydraulic fluids. Contamination can damage pumps and motors.

Cutting Deck Service

Proper deck maintenance ensures a clean cut and long belt life.

  1. Belt Inspection/Replacement: Check for cracks and wear. Release deck tension, route new belt per diagram on deck.
  2. Blade Removal: Block blade with wood, use socket to remove retaining bolt (usually left-hand thread).
  3. Deck Leveling: Set cutting height to 3 inches. Measure blade tip height at all four corners; adjust deck hangers.
  4. Spindle Bearing Check: Grasp blade and attempt to rock it. Any play indicates worn bearings needing replacement.
  5. Deck Wash Port: Connect garden hose after mowing to clean underside; avoid direct pressure on bearings.

Electrical System

12-volt negative ground system. Battery: 12V, 280 CCA minimum.

Tip: Disconnect negative battery cable first when performing electrical work.

Storage & Winterization

Proper preparation prevents fuel system damage and corrosion during off-season storage.

  1. Add fuel stabilizer to tank and run engine for 5 minutes to circulate.
  2. Change engine oil and filter.
  3. Clean entire mower, especially the underside of the deck.
  4. Remove battery, clean terminals, and store in a cool, dry place on a trickle charger.
  5. Store in a clean, dry location, preferably with the deck lowered.

CAUTION! Never store with gasoline in the carburetor without stabilizer; it will form varnish.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine cranks but won't startNo fuel, bad spark, clogged air filterCheck fuel shut-off valve, spark plug, replace air filter.
Loss of power or driveLow hydraulic fluid, air in system, worn drive beltCheck fluid level, bleed system, inspect drive belt tension.
Uneven cuttingDeck not level, dull/bent blades, low tire pressureLevel deck, sharpen/balance/replace blades, inflate tires.
Excessive vibrationUnbalanced blade, loose spindle pulley, debris on deckStop engine immediately. Inspect blade and spindle fasteners.
Battery won't chargeLoose cables, faulty alternator, bad batteryCheck connections, test alternator output (approx. 13.5-14.5V), load test battery.

Reset: For electronic issues, disconnect battery for 5 minutes to reset controller.
