Engine Care

Proper engine maintenance is critical for reliable operation.

  1. Oil change: Drain when warm; refill with SAE 30 or 10W-30 (approx. 2 quarts).
  2. Air filter: Replace paper element; clean foam pre-cleaner if equipped.
  3. Spark plug: Gap at 0.030 inches; replace annually or if fouled.
  4. Fuel system: Use fuel stabilizer if storing over 30 days; drain carburetor if long-term storage.
  5. Cooling system: Keep cooling fins and air intake clear of debris.

WARNING! Engine is hot after operation; allow to cool before servicing.

Cutting Deck Adjustment

Proper deck leveling ensures even cut.

  1. Park on level surface; set cutting height to middle position.
  2. Measure blade tip height from ground at all four corners of deck.
  3. Adjust deck hangers: Turn adjustment nuts to raise/lower each side.
  4. Front-to-back pitch: Deck should be 1/4-inch lower in front than rear.
  5. Check blade sharpness: Dull blades tear grass; sharpen or replace as needed.

CAUTION! Disconnect spark plug wire before working under deck.

Storage & Winterization

Prepare mower for off-season storage.

  1. Clean thoroughly: Remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris.
  2. Fuel treatment: Add fuel stabilizer and run engine for 5 minutes, or drain tank and carburetor completely.
  3. Change oil: Fresh oil prevents acid buildup during storage.
  4. Remove battery: Store in cool, dry place; charge monthly.
  5. Store indoors: Keep in dry, covered location; elevate if on tires.

Tip: Lubricate all pivot points before storage.
