Safety Information

Read and understand all safety instructions before operating.

  1. Always wear appropriate safety gear: eye protection, hearing protection, long pants, and sturdy shoes.
  2. Clear mowing area of debris, rocks, and other objects before starting.
  3. Never allow children or untrained persons to operate the mower.
  4. Do not mow on slopes greater than 15 degrees; mow up and down slopes, not across.
  5. Stop engine and remove key before performing any maintenance or clearing blockages.

WARNING! Rotating blades can cause severe injury. Keep hands and feet away from deck while engine is running. Be aware of your surroundings, especially when backing up.

Assembly & Setup

Unpack and inspect all parts. Assembly requires basic tools.

  1. Install steering control levers: Attach to pivot points and secure with provided hardware.
  2. Attach seat: Position on seat plate and secure with bolts.
  3. Connect battery: Attach red (+) cable first, then black (-) cable.
  4. Check tire pressure: Inflate to recommended PSI (front: 14 psi, rear: 10 psi).
  5. Add engine oil and fuel: Use SAE 10W-30 oil and unleaded gasoline with octane rating of 87 or higher.

CAUTION! Use two people when handling heavy components like the mower deck. Ensure all bolts are tightened to specified torque.

Controls and Operation

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.

Operator Station: Ignition key, PTO switch, parking brake lever, throttle control, lap bar steering controls, and cruise control (if equipped).

Starting Procedure: Sit in seat, engage parking brake, set throttle to half, turn key to START. To engage blades: Ensure throttle is at full, pull up on PTO switch. Steering: Move both lap bars forward to go forward; to turn, slow one side while maintaining speed on the other. Stopping: Release lap bars to neutral, engage parking brake, turn key to OFF.

Engine Care

The Kohler 7000 Series engine requires regular oil changes and air filter service.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil, then drain via drain plug into pan. Refill with SAE 10W-30 (approx. 2 quarts). Check dipstick.
  2. Air Filter: Remove cover, clean pre-cleaner if foam, replace paper element if dirty.
  3. Spark Plug: Gap to 0.030 inches, replace annually or per hours of operation.
  4. Fuel System: Use fresh fuel, add fuel stabilizer for storage, replace fuel filter annually.

WARNING! Engine and components are hot after operation. Allow to cool before servicing.

Deck Adjustment & Blade Care

Proper deck leveling and sharp blades ensure a clean cut.

  1. Deck Leveling: Park on level surface. Adjust deck lift linkage to equalize height at all gauge wheel points.
  2. Blade Removal: Disconnect spark plug wire. Use blade removal tool to hold blade; loosen bolt (standard thread, left-hand thread on some models).
  3. Blade Sharpening: Sharpen at original angle (approx. 30 degrees). Balance blade before reinstalling.
  4. Belt Inspection: Check V-belts for cracks or wear. Adjust tension if belt slips.

CAUTION! Always disconnect spark plug wire before working under deck. Wear heavy gloves when handling blades.

Storage & Winterization

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues and corrosion.

  1. Clean mower thoroughly, especially underside of deck.
  2. Add fuel stabilizer to tank, run engine for 5 minutes to circulate.
  3. Change engine oil and filter.
  4. Remove battery, clean terminals, store in cool dry place on a trickle charger.
  5. Store in a dry, covered location, preferably off concrete floor.

Tip: Lubricate all pivot points and grease fittings before storage.
